How have art movements developed within videogames throughout the 21st century?
in my bachelors dissertation, i position important events and design trends in games across the 21st century within the context of an art history understanding of art movements and artworlds. i identify three art movements unique to games that emerged across the past two decades, analysing the creators involved in each, their prominent works, critical reaction, and institutions that were built around them. i find that the indie game revolution of the late 00s, the queer games avant-garde of the early 2010s and the cosy game revolution of the early 2020s have all been integral to shaping games discourse and the understanding of what games can be. furthermore, they have widened the accessibility and inclusivity of the games artworld, turning games from an exclusive boys club into a world where women and queer people are given platforms to create and engage with games.
